What happens when well-loved stars from rival networks team up for a movie? A star-studded red carpet premiere. Last Tuesday night, November 6th at SM Megamall, stars from Kapamilya and Kapuso networks showed support to their dear friends' movie, Kung Paano Siya Nawala.
JM De Guzman's comeback movie, with versatile actress Rhian Ramos, was definitely worth the wait. It is not only their first team-up as co-actors, but also as co-producers - that's how much they believe in the quality and the message of the movie. This is quite a pressure for JM, as his last romance movie before taking a 3-year showbiz hiatus, That Thing Called Tadhana with Angelica Panganiban, was a massive hit.
Equipped with reliable acting skills, Rhian and JM will certainly leave a mark in your mind with the question, "Can the heart remember what the mind forgets?" It is a hopeful tale of how people can still win despite the many battles that love entails. Whether it’s a jealous partner, a broken family, an addiction, the past, the present, the future, or a unique mental disorder, love always wins in the end.
It tells the story of Lio, a shy and inclusive young guy who finds it difficult to connect with other people because of his strange condition: face blindness (a cognitive disorder characterized by an inability to recognize faces). Then he finds himself unexpectedly opening up to the world when he falls in love with Shana, a beautiful free-spirited woman who rescues dogs from shelters, spontaneously kisses strangers, but also has skeletons in her cupboard.
Both JM's and Rhian's characters will make you love and care for them. As expected, JM does a commendable job making us feel the hardship of his character. We feel sorry for him. While the movie does not go as deep into Shana’s side of the story, we can’t help but feel for her as well.
Despite coming off as vivacious and appealingly quirky at first, we gradually understand where she’s coming from and why she does what she does. Rhian plays the role fantastically -- the charisma, the simplicity, and the melancholy all combined makes her character equally lovable.
Both great and versatile, JM and Rhian's chemistry is undeniable. You can tell from their scenes how naturally good actors they are. They are obviously very comfortable with each other, even with lines and scenes that may seem awkward. They effortlessly delivered emotions, that you may think they are doing adlibs. Kudos to them as well for being so generous to their imaginative fans, especially JM - who, even with no hard-rock abs, was brave enough to allow himself to be seen in his boxer briefs and shorts. This movie requires your full attention as it makes you care and find out what will happen to their characters.

Kung Paano Siya Nawala is directed and co-written by Joel Ruiz, making this his full-length debut. He was known for one of the viral #KwentongJollibee short films that made everyone cry like babies. In the movie, Ruiz successfully explored the highs and lows of a modern relationship, exploring a whole new take on contemporary urban love stories about holding on and letting go.
Brought by TBA Studios, the same outfit that brought us the films I’m Drunk, I Love You and Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral, Kung Paano Siya Nawala also stars Agot Isidro, Barbara Ruaro, Paolo O'Hara and with a special participation of Ricky Davao. Catch it in cinemas nationwide beginning November 14.
