Ang Larawan Gets a Unanimous “A”

“Ang Larawan,” the lone musical entry in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival, has gotten a grade of “A” from the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB).

The musical written by National Artist for Theater Rolando Tinio and composed by Ryan Cayabyab is the only film this year wherein all CEB eleven members who previewed gave the highest grade. The CEB summation stated, “It is seldom and rare that the members of the Board give a unanimous A to a film.“

Historic Last La Naval Procession in Intramuros

The Feast of the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary La Naval de Manila is one of the most awaited religious celebrations in the Philippines; its procession which begins in the Santo Domingo Church along Quezon Avenue, attracts droves of devotees.

This much-revered tradition takes its roots in Intramuros, the Old Manila, when the Santo Domingo Church was located prior to the bombing of Manila in World War II.  The last La Naval procession in Intramuros is recreated in the movie “Ang Larawan,” one of the eight entries in the 2017 Metro Manila Film Festival, which begins on December 25.

A Dream Cast of Musical Artists

There’s going to be plenty of “biritan” and “kantahan” in “Ang Larawan,” an entry in the 2017 Metro Manila Film Festival. “Ang Larawan” is the Filipino musical based on Nick Joaquin’s play A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino. Set in 1941 in Intramuros, it tells of how sisters Candida and Paula defiantly hold on to their father’s painting, and how their handsome boarder Tony Javier wants to change their minds.

No matter how I’m feeling, I always find myself struggling with certain stuff, or I find myself stuck in the same thing that keeps repeating over and over again and I’m just like, how am I going to end this? It’s that moment where you’re in it, and then you’re going to separate yourself from that situation and you look at it and you see it for what it is. Then you’re able to do something about it and realize that you have now broken out of that cycle.
