Rocco Impressed the Enpress

The Philippine Entertainment Press Society (Enpress) is already on their 9th year of bestowing recognitions and commendations to the outstanding filmmakers, movies, actors and actresses in the country. This year, the Golden Screen Awards ceremony was held at the Teatrino in Promenade Greenhills, San Juan City last March 24, 2012.

I had the chance to attend this glamorous event and was so excited about it. This was my first time attending an awards night for movies, a chance I never expected to have because I had never been associated with any press, movie, television, showbiz-related agencies and companies. I was there to support a good friend, Rocco Nacino, who was nominated for one of the major categories.

Amidst the pouring of hard rain, it was still a shining night filled with bright stars as celebrities graced the event in their stunning outfits.

The whole awarding night was full of laughter as the multi-awarded actor-host-comedian, John “Sweet” Lapus was hilarious during the entire night! He was a great host, ensuring to cover not just for the crowd’s boredom, but also made certain that the nominees felt at ease while waiting for the announcement of winners.

John Lapus had 5 outfits!

The program started with a tribute to Whitney Houston as Protégé’s Lovely Embuscardo gave a rendition of “I Will Always Love You.” There were also some performers for the night such as the P-pop group Down to Mars, and Protégé grand winner, Krizza Neri who sang her carrier single “Ba’t Di Ko Pa Nasabi”, also the theme song of GMA-7’s top-rated afternoon drama, The Good Daughter

Last year’s Best Breakthrough Actress for her debut movie, Emir, Francheska Farr also wowed the crowd with her own version of a Jesse J song.

The event was not the usual serious type of awarding ceremony, even the presenters and the winners didn’t go with the typical dramatic and emotional speeches.

A surprise in the evening was the appearance of the country’s one and only Superstar, Nora Aunor, who was this year’s recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award

Eugene Domingo and Matet De Leon presented the Lino Brocka Lifetime Achievement Award to Nora Aunor
Edgar Allan Guzman serenaded the Superstar

I was never a “Noranian” (and my mom is a Sharonian), so I know nothing about her, except for her famous gestures, but the tribute video about her gave me a view of how extremely talented and how world-renowned Nora Aunor was! Together with Matet De Leon, the special award was presented by Eugene Domingo, and she was also serenaded by Edgar Allan Guzman

Anyway, I was there to support Rocco, and it was really nerve-wrecking as we crossed our fingers, waiting for the presenters to finally announce the winner for the category where he was nominated. It was indeed a thrilling moment when we finally heard his name, announced as winner for the Best Breakthrough Actor category for his first movie Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa, beating five other strong contenders including Alden Richards (The Road), JM De Guzman (Pintakasi) and Kean Cipriano (Ang Babae sa Septic Tank). It was such a joy to Rocco and his family to have all his efforts recognized by the Golden Screen Awards! His hard work and determination is finally starting to be paid off! :)

Talked to some of the press people during the awards night and they had mentioned that Rocco is indeed very deserving of the award because of his unquestionably brilliant performance in last year’s Cinemalaya entry, “Sayaw.” They also exclaimed their praises to Rocco’s fantastic performance in his afternoon drama, The Good Daughter, and were all very excited and positive on Rocco’s portrayal in his first ever title role, Lam-ang. Truly, the award is not just a testament of how talented and how good Rocco is, but also a welcoming door for him to more challenging projects and a promise of a brighter star ahead.

Rocco blissfully shows his trophy.

Also big winners in the awards night were Rocco’s “Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa” co-star, Jean Garcia, who bagged the trophy for Best Drama Actress; and his little sister in “The Good Daughter,” Angeli Nicole Sanoy, who won as the Best Breakthrough Actress.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to bring my pen and notebook, so I wasn’t able to take down notes on the complete list of winners, but I have some photos for you to enjoy and a glimpse of what transpired during the night.
